I couldn't have been more wrong, because I got the help I needed and it really wasn't that bad. I also learned people in the mental health unit are some of the nicest, most sympathetic, and caring people I've ever met, even the wacky ones. Please don't be scared to ask for help, because you won't get better just sitting there. To be honest, I miss everyone I was there with because we all got along and could talk for hours. I still keep in contact with a guy who was like my best friend in there.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a film directed by Milos forman. The film based on a novel by the same name written by Ken Kesey. This movie refers constantly to different authorities that control individuals through subtle and coercive methods. Randall Patrick McMurphy an imposing, red-headed Irishman, R.P. McMurphy enters the institution after he is convicted of statutory rape, yet immediately it is suspected that he is a sane man who chose the institution as preferable when compared to the work farm where he would have been sentenced. McMurphy is a boisterous man and a "gambling fool" who looks out primarily for his own self-interest. For Kesey, McMurphy represents ideas of sexuality, freedom and self-determination against Nurse Ratched's oppression.

In that mental institution there was a nurse named nurse Ratched A middle-aged nurse who controls the institution where McMurphy is sentenced, Nurse Ratched (also known as Big Nurse) is a stern, controlling woman who behaves with a serene confidence. She is a mechanical woman who attempts to suppress all human, and in particular all feminine characteristics, but she cannot hide her large breasts, her one incongruous physical trait. She is manipulative and dictatorial, using any methods to assert her power over the patients. In comparison to McMurphy, Nurse Ratched represents ideas of sexual repression, authoritarianism and conservatism. "Ratched' who has a great influence on the patients. Mac Murphy didn't know that nurse Ratched has the power to keep him there forever. There was a challenge between MacMurphy and the nurse, which she wanted badly to win the contest. MacMurpy was having a good friendship with the other patients includes Billy Bibbit who committed suicide, a teenager whom Ratched has humiliated and dominated, and Chief Bromden a tall, half-Indian patient in the ward, he is the patient who has been in the institution the longest. Although others think that he is deaf and mute, Chief Bromden instead chooses not to speak, originally because others ignored him and then out of fear of Nurse Ratched. With the help of McMurphy, he begins to speak once more and reassert himself against Nurse Ratched and her workers. Chief was mostly ignored because of being mute, but also respected because of his size. MacMurpy saw in Billy a younger brother figure, and he wanted to teach him how to have fun.

One night McMurphy sneaks into the nurse's station and calls his girlfriend, Candy, and tells her to bring booze. Another woman tags along and both enter the ward after McMurphy bribes the night watchman. The patients drink while Billy flirts with McMurphy's girlfriend. McMurphy sees that Billy likes Candy and tells her to sleep with Bibbit. While Billy and McMurphy's girlfriend are in a separate room, the rest of the patients, including McMurphy and the Chief who had been planning to escape, pass out from drinking. When Nurse Ratched arrives the next morning she commands the attendants to clean up the patients and conduct a head count. A confrontation with Billy leads directly to his suicide. McMurphy explodes into a violent rage, viciously throttling Ratched. McMurphy is subdued and taken away again for punishment; he's given an electric shock and eventually returned to the ward. Chief Bromden, unwilling to leave McMurphy behind, suffocates his neurologically disabled friend with a pillow. He follows Randle's plan and successfully escape.
